A face oil in your routine: when, how and why
Published on July 23, 2026

A face oil has something luxurious about it. But a lot of people are unsure: do you apply it before or after your cream? In the morning or in the evening? And how much do you actually need? Here is a clear explanation.
When do you apply a face oil?
The general rule of thumb: from thin to thick. An oil is usually the richest product in your routine, so it most often comes last — or just before your cream. Some people even mix a few drops of oil into their day or night cream. Both work; try what feels best for your skin.
Morning or evening?
A lightweight oil works perfectly well in the morning under your moisturiser. A richer oil often feels more pleasant in an evening routine, when your skin is winding down. Here too: there is no strict rule.
How much do you need?
Less than you think. Two to four drops are usually enough for the whole face. Warm them briefly between your palms and press them gently into the skin rather than rubbing firmly.
A nice extra: the facial massage
An oil is wonderfully suited to a short facial massage. Its slippery texture makes it easy to take a few minutes for yourself — a small ritual that makes your routine a little calmer.
